6 Wednesdays, February 29 to April 4
Workshop: 7-9 PM
Lost+Found Arts Collective, Calvary UMC Education Building

Please contact Dawn K. Dreyer to register or for more information:
919.682.1690 or dawn@crackedwindowstudios.com

Desert times may come upon us, bleak and unbidden. Or, we may choose to enter the desert, to separate ourselves from the everyday, even just for a few moments. The experience can strengthen our Spirit, allowing us to embrace change, face new challenges, and listen more closely to God’s call. On our journey together, we will practice Natalie Goldberg’s freewriting exercises from Writing Down the Bones, and other playful creative techniques including bookmaking, exploring labyrinths, and muddying our hands with clay. We will engage short readings by Barbara Brown Taylor (An Altar in the World) and others and use spiritual practices such as lectio divina (a close reading of spiritual texts) to move more deeply into what the Word has to tell us. It is my hope that our Lenten creative journey will guide us to discover what sustains us, what practices draw us closer to God, and what habits we might release that separate us from the Spirit. No previous writing or artistic experience required – imperfection will be encouraged and celebrated!

Article in The Interpreter about last year’s Desert Time: A Lenten
Creative Journey:

Dawn Dreyer is a community-based, mixed media, conceptual artist/activist. She has taught writing for over 20 years and is currently an instructor at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke
University (CDS). In 2007, Dawn received a fellowship to spend nine months as at Pendle Hill, a Quaker center outside of Philadelphia. Her exhibition of clay sculpture, Body Imperfect | Body Divine: The Belly Project was displayed at Pendle Hill gallery. She has exhibited her photography at the Durham Arts Council and the Durham Art Walk, and her audio work has aired on WUNC and been featured in gallery exhibitions. Dawn is the principal/founder of Cracked Window Studios, which encompasses both her arts consulting work and her own creative projects. She has been a member of Calvary United Methodist Church since 2001.

Entering into relationship: As you heard me preach on Sunday as Christ entered into relationship with us by leaving everything heavenly to be with us, so Christ wants us to enter into relationship with one another. I pray that you have been praying for who is the person that the Holy Spirit wants you to meet with. Who is it that you are to get to know better in our congregation? Remember, find time preferably face to face (but it can also be over the phone) to just talk about your story. You don’t have to tell everything! But tell things that you feel safe telling.
